STEM CELL
RESEARCH
The Stem Cell Research Enhancement Act was passed and
then vetoed by former President Bush in mid-2007. This bill
would have allowed federal funds to be used for potentially
life-saving research through the use of stem cells
derived from human embryos created and then discarded
during fertility treatments. The House and Senate both
passed the bill with strong support from mainstream
Republicans. |

GLOBAL GAG RULE
This policy bans foreign organizations that
receive federal family planning money from using
their own, non-federal, funds to provide legal
abortions or medical counseling about abortion.
This regulation was reestablished by the Bush
administration. Following that action, the U.S. House passed a
partial repeal of the Global Gag Rule, and the Senate
then approved its full repeal in an amendment by Sen.
Olympia Snowe. |
ANTI-CHOICE threats TO TITLE x
FUNDs
Title X funding is a vital component of many family
planning services provided to millions of low-income
women and families nationwide. Numerous amendments aimed
at blocking Planned Parenthood and other clinics from
receiving funds for family planning services have been
defeated in the past with the help of key Republican
moderates in both the House and the Senate. |
